I’ve noticed an increasing trend in recent years. Superheroes—especially those in movies—hate the ground. They are always dropping to the ground on one knee and punching it.

Iron Man Vol. 3 #75 by Adi Granov (2004)
The earliest example I could find was the above cover by Adi Granov in 2004. Could this be where the trend started? It’s definitely an dynamic image by a great artist.

Iron Man movie promotional pic (2008)
Which is probably why Adi Granov was chosen to help design the movie Iron Man’s armor, and why the above promotional pic was made to emulate Granov’s earlier cover.
And then the pose started showing up everywhere.

Iron Man 2 (2010)
In the first scene of Iron Man 2, the pose shows up again as Tony Stark arrives at the convention. This example of showboating shows an obvious understanding of the pose’s iconic status.

Black Widow in a similar pose. Iron Man 2 (2010)

Sucker Punch (2011)
Sucker Punch? More like Ground Punch! Here we have three times the punch of Iron Man. Plus hot chicks.

Thor (2011)
Finally, a movie superhero realizes that he can use a weapon to punch the ground, yielding greater earth-shattering results.

The Governator trailer (2011)
And then this crap happened.
